The Navy Cross
and the Army Distinguished Service Cross

Note:  We have listed all recipients of these awards based on research from several sources.  Anyone who knows of additional Barracks officers entitled to be listed should notify chamembers@centerhouse.org)

Historical Note

The Navy Cross was first authorized on February 4, 1919, and was initially the Navy's 3rd highest award for combat heroism and other distinguished services.  On August 7, 1942 Congress made the Navy Cross a COMBAT ONLY decoration with precedence over the Distinguished Service Medal, making it the Navy's 2nd highest award, ranking below only the Medal of Honor.  It shares this position with the Army's Distinguished Service Cross and the Air Force Cross.

The Army Distinguished Service Cross was established by order of President Woodrow Wilson and was born as part of the new Pyramid Of Honor that was established during the 1917 review of Medal of Honor awards.  Prior to establishment of the DSC by virtue of War Department General Orders Number 6 of January 12, 1918, and by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918 the Medal of Honor was the only American award for valor in combat available to U. S. Army personnel.

Because of this historical dichotomy between combat and non-combat awards, only those Barracks officers with citations earned in combat are listed.
______________________

There are certain instances wherein a citation for the recipient's Navy Cross and the Army Distinguished Service Cross are essentially verbatim. When Marine units are part of an overall Army command, the Army, at its discretion, may award the Army DSC for the same acts for which the Navy Cross was independently awarded. The same is true for the Medal of Honor, as during World War I, five Marines received both the Army Medal of Honor and the Navy Medal of Honor for the same act of valor.

Barracks officers have been awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Cross in various wars since those medals were authorized.  The individual recipients are listed with their citations on separate pages in this section, according to the war in which the medal was earned.
